Summer Fun in Lafayette Square

Lafayette Square Historic District is one of my absolute favorite St. Louis neighborhoods, between the gorgeous late-19th century Victorian architecture and the dozens of terrific shops and eateries. That being said, the true draw and charm of Lafayette Square is how cohesive the people that live there are. If you have never, head there this summer to enjoy some of their activities in the park which is the epicenter of activity in this special area...

Great fun!

Hidden Gem: Lone Elk Park and the World Bird Sanctuary

Anyone who knows me well (or follows me on Instagram) is aware that I spend the bulk of my free time outside with my family, soaking in the beauty and serenity of our local parks.  During the warmer 9 months of the year, I am typically in the isolated wooded and elevated river view trails of Castlewood State Park...

On the wildlife-filled trails of Queeny Park...

Exploring the original farm house, stables, and surrounding grounds at Longview Farm...

Getting lost in Babler State Park...

 Or biking Forest Park...

As far as public parks go, St. Louis is top-notch.  The city owns and maintains over 100 parks (like Tower Grove and Lafayette), the county owns and maintains over 40 parks (like Creve Coeur Lake), and there are 10 Missouri State Parks within the Greater St. Louis area.  There are incredible local resources for fellow outdoor-lovers.

I mention it, as this morning I drove through one of my area favorites- a total hidden gem- and was surprised to discover that I have never done a blog post on it.  The fact is, when the boys were little, I spent a LOT of time here as they were (and are) total animal lovers.  Though as they have grown up and life has gotten busy... I simply forgot how special it is until I did a random drive-through this morning while killing time before a showing with a client.

Lone Elk Park is over 540 acres, located at 141 and 44 just west of the town of Valley Park...

The park was originally part of the Tyson Valley Powder Plant during WWII, where ammunition was stored and tested.  There are still numerous towers, bunkers, and firing platforms scattered around the park.  HERE is more about the history and name of the park.  After the war, the area became a public park and herds of elk and bison were established.

There are a ton of incredible trail heads and excellent places to get lost in the woods at Lone Elk, though we typically just take advantage of the driving route for wildlife viewing due to no domestic animals allowed (sorry Willow) and frequent tick/chigger infestation with the animals.

The park is free of charge for entry and is an AMAZING place to get in close proximity to the animals in their wild habitat...
One of my favorite aspects of visiting Lone Elk, is you never really know what you will stumble upon.  As the animals freely wander the park, it is often a game of "Where's Waldo".  Sometimes, you spot nothing.  Other times, you get super lucky like I did today!

A peek at my morning elk encounters...

The bison area this morning...

Note, parents of young ones:  this is an INCREDIBLE cold-weather excursion where you can get the kids out in nature and in close-proximity to animals without paying a penny or even unstrapping them from the car seat.

Just adjacent to Lone Elk Park is the World Bird Sanctuary, one of North America's largest facilities for the conservation of birds with over 300 acres and 200 animals in their care...

We rarely visited one without the other with the boys.  The sanctuary educates, rehabilitates, conducts field studies and research, and does captive breeding of injured and threatened birds of prey.  Only here do you get the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the rarest birds found in nature in an open air display...

So incredible, so cool.  While the World Bird Sanctuary is also 100% free to visitors, I always donate to the care of the animals whenever I visit.  They do amazing work.

The 2014 Lafayette Square Holiday Parlour Tour

If you have to choose one St. Louis Holiday House Tour...
This is it, locals!

The 2014 Lafayette Square Holiday Parlor Tour allows you the opportunity to stroll through beautifully maintained 19th century Victorian Architecture.  What makes Lafayette Square special?

The gorgeous "painted ladies", of course!  Lafayette Square has and will always be one of my favorite neighborhoods to show properties. So much historical integrity remains in the area- so much neighborhood pride. Take a more in-depth peek at the neighborhood history HERE in one of my previous blog posts.

Tickets for this house tour sell out quickly, so I would recommend reserving your spot now while there are still tickets available!   Visit the Lafayette Square website HERE for more information.

Just For Fun: A walk around Lafayette Park...

Surrounded by the most lovely 19th century Victorian "painted ladies"...

(some of the oldest and most ornate architecture in St.Louis )

...sits St. Louis's oldest public park (and the first park west of the Mississippi River)!  Circa 1836, the 30-acre Lafayette Park sits as the focal point to the historic Lafayette Square neighborhood.

I, like most local Realtors, spend a lot of time in and around the uber popular Lafayette Square area showing properties.  Not often, however, do I take the time to park the car and stroll through the park grounds even though I love it.

This week, I enjoyed an afternoon spell at one of my favorite city hidden gems with Reed, and decided to stroll through the park with him for giggles.

 A peek at the time...
Lafayette Park is as picturesque and filled-with-character as it looks.  I encourage you to take 10 extra minutes out of your day next time, and park the car!

Hidden Gem: PW Pizza in Lafayette Square

I stumbled upon a fantastic local find this week that I HAVE to share. I am about to date myself BIG TIME, though with my 20th high school reunion coming up, I have been scouting possible local locations for the main event. While out and about with the boys this week, I ran down to Lafayette Square to scope out the event rooms at Moulin, owned by the same family who owns 2 of my ALL TIME favorite local eateries: 1111 Mississippi and Vin de Set.

We stepped out of the car and BAM!

"What is that SMELL, Mama?? YUM!  It almost smells like SHAKESPEARE'S!!" both of my boys exclaimed upon stepping out of the car and being accosted by the smell of pizza.

Ok, may I just say that those are some BIG shoes to fill as any good upstanding Mizzou alum will attest. Shakespeare's is not just a pizza, it is an institution.  Though I concurred with what they were saying.  The air around the historic Centennial Malt House complex that houses Moulin and Vin de Set was FILLED with the most lovely scent of pizza - delicious homemade pizza.

A quick turn of the head found this...

I have been to Vin de Set on numerous occasions, though evidently not since this new street level eatery was added to the complex.  As it was close to dinner time, we decided to pop in for a quick bite after scoping out the Moulin venue (which by the way, was my class's choice for our event). Man,  I'm glad that we did!

Owned by Paul and Wendy Hamilton and recently voted by St. Louis Magazine as one of the Top New Restaurants in St. Louis for 2011, PW Pizza features delectable hand tossed pizza made with fresh seasonal ingredients.  There’s only one size (12 inches) of pizza and one thickness (medium-thin).

The environment is cozy and warm with exposed brick, an open kitchen, a friendly staff, and gorgeous original industrial architectural goodies...

The food is fresh, affordable, and delicious.

We started with the house made roasted red pepper hummus with warm, fresh baked pita...

Our dinner choice - 1/2 "Big Balls" (tomato sauce, house made meatballs, caramelized onion, green pepper, fresh basil, provolone, pecorino, romano) and 1/2 "Magherita" (tomato sauce, fresh basil, fresh mozzarella, pecorino, romano)- both with light cheese.
It was not only as good as it looks... it was BETTER.  I will dare to say that this is possibly the most delicious traditional crust that I have ever eaten in St. Louis.  This pie was most definitely the best pizza that I have eaten since leaving Italy.

In fact, it was so delicious that Parker called dibs on the leftovers for lunch the next day ;) ...
I cannot wait to return, plain and simple. PW Pizza is definitely a new Nenonen Family favorite.
